About the product

The Glendronach 15yo has a special status among whisky lovers. It has been a fixture for true enjoyers for years. So when recently the packaging was completely revamped (along with the rest of the base range), it was feared that its composition and quality would also change. There was no need to worry though, this 15-year-old whisky still lives up to its reputation in full.

It matured entirely in sherry casks, which is The Glendronach's speciality. This expression involves a combination of oloroso casks and PX casks. Oloroso sherry is the most commonly used when it comes to whisky maturation, and the name itself explains its popularity: literally, it means as much as ‘the fragrant’ or ‘the aromatic’ and this type of cask adds enormous complexity to a maturing whisky. PX, in turn, stands for Pedro Ximenez, which in turn is a sherry made from the grape of the same name. While most sherry in Spain is made from the palomino grape, PX is a special variety. The grapes are left to dry in the warm Spanish sun after harvest, losing moisture and gaining flavour intensity. The result is a thick, almost syrupy and sweet sherry with a special tasting experience. This type of cask adds sweetness, as well as typical flavours of dried fruit, to a maturing whisky.

The combination of these casks creates a very rich palette of flavours in The Glendronach 15yo. The nose offers you an addictive mix of maraschino cherry, ripe blackberry and black chocolate, with hints of orange bitters and walnut liqueur. On the palate, you get apricot glazed with honey, ripe fig and a crescendo of black cherry, angelica and dark brown sugar. That smorgasbord of flavours continues into the finish, with great length.

About the brand

Glendronach literally means, in Gaelic, ‘Valley of Blackberries’. A fairy-tale name for a distillery with a lot of history, a special aura and, above all, memorable whisky. Glendronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice. Today, it is known as one of the leading producers of Scotch whisky matured in sherry casks. Glendronach was closed for a while between 1996 and 2002 and things were not looking good for its future. A series of acquisitions saw it join a group that also included Benriach and Glenglassaugh, led by Billy Walker. That revived the brand and built it into a crowd favourite, with legendary bottlings. In 2016, the group came into the hands of Brown Forman, the US company that also heads Jack Daniel's and Woodford's bourbons, among others. This promises a bright future for the three single malt distilleries, which will have a strong partner for more growth globally.

Glendronach's main focus, however, remains the creation of beautiful whiskies. The hand of Rachel Barrie, the new master blender, is clear. With great expertise, she selects the casks used to compose Glendronach's base range and manages to keep quality high year after year. Work is also currently underway to significantly expand production capacity to produce even more quality spirit in the future.

Flagship on offer is the 12yo, aged exclusively in a combination of oloroso and PX sherry casks. Then there are also the 15yo, the 18yo and the 21yo to discover, and regularly limited official bottlings such as the Cask Strength and the Grandeur.
