Papalin 7 years
Velier
About the product
When the first tropical blends were created at the end of the nineteenth century, by companies like Myer's and John Wray Nephew, it was not the custom to specify exactly what the ingredients of the blend were. In fact, the recipe was a closely guarded secret. For the Papalin project, Luca Gargano wanted to offer more transparency, so it was decided to do indicate that the blend was composed of rums from two distilleries in Jamaica: Hampden and Worthy Park. Both rums were aged for at least seven years at the distillery. What the exact percentages are of each rum has not been disclosed.
This is a rum suitable for both seasoned rum lovers and novice explorers. It provides a fine example of what Jamaican rum is or can be. the nose is rich and harmonious, with apple, lemon, almond, eucalyptus and burnt wood. However, the nose is only a precursor to the intense palate on the palate: vanilla, spices, mint, liquorice, cardamom,... come together in a complex and beneficent sip. The finish is what you expect from an intense Jamaican rum: long, rich and culminating in a symphony of coffee, acacia, green tea, lemon, walnut and almond milk. Layers of flavour alternate in this rum, contributing to a taste experience that is highly satisfying.
About the brand
Papalin is a Velier project conceived by spiritual father Luca Gargano. The idea is based on a desire to go back in rum history, to the late 19th century, when Jamaican merchants began making blends of rums from different distilleries. The idea of blending then became widespread in Europe, but Papalin's intention is to go back to basics.
That is, Papalin wants to blend rums made on 1 island and all aged in the distilleries that made them. Originally, no mention was ever made of exactly which distilleries the rums came from, but Papalin wants to offer transparency. The first in line is the Papalin 7yo Jamaica, which is composed of rums from Hampden and Worthy Park, all aged for at least seven years.
In time, the aim is to create a similar blend for each island. In this way, Papalin's collection will be a nice sample of the styles of rums made on each island, at an affordable price and with high quality.
Papalin is the name of one of the first blends Luca Gargano created in 2012, and comes from a song he made up himself and sang to his newborn daughter Emily at the time.
